เชียงคาน อำเภอเล็กๆ ติดริมแม่น้ำโขง ที่นอกจากจะมีแหล่งท่องเที่ยวทางธรรมชาติอันงดงามแล้ว ดินแดนเล็กๆ แห่งนี้ ยังถือว่าเป็นเมืองแห่งพระพุทธศาสนาอีกด้วย เพราะไม่ว่าเราจะหันหน้าไปทางไหน ก็จะพบวัดกับชุมชนที่ตั้งอยู่ร่วมกันได้อย่างกลมกลืน หรือแม้แต่การร่วมมือร่วมใจของชาวบ้านในพิธีบุญสำคัญๆ ในแต่ละเทศกาลที่เวียนมาถึง ก็ยังคงได้รับการสืบทอดและปฏิบัติติดต่อกันมาจวบจนปัจจุบัน
“วัดศรีคุณเมือง” หรือ “วัดใหญ่” หนึ่งในหลายศาสนสถานสำคัญและถือเป็นจุดศูนย์รวมจิตใจของชาวบ้านที่นี่ ตั้งอยู่บนถนนชายโขง ระหว่างซอยศรีเชียงคาน 6 และซอยศรีเชียงคาน 7 วัดนี้ถูกสร้างขึ้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2485 และถือเป็นวัดเก่าแก่ที่อยู่คู่บ้านคู่เมืองเชียงคานมาอย่างยาวนาน และทุกวันพระรวมถึงวันสำคัญทางพุทธศาสนา วัดแห่งนี้จะคลาคล่ำไปด้วยผู้คน ซึ่งมีทั้งชาวเชียงคานเองรวมถึงนักท่องเที่ยวผู้มาเยือน ที่ต่างก็พร้อมใจกันมาร่วมทำบุญตักบาตร ฟังเทศน์ ฟังธรรมกันอย่างถ้วนหน้า

และเมื่อเดินผ่านประตูโบสถ์เข้ามาด้านใน ก็จะพบกับพระพุทธรูปไม้จำหลัก ลงรักปิดทอง ปางประธานอภัย ที่สร้างตามแบบศิลปะล้านช้างหรือแบบลาว ซึ่งคาดว่าน่าจะสร้างขึ้นมาในสมัยพุทธศตวรรษที่ 24-25 และมีข้อสังเกตว่าสำหรับผู้หญิงแล้ว การที่จะเข้ามาสักการะพระพุทธรูปไม้จำหลักนี้ จะทำได้เพียงการก้มกราบอยู่ตรงบริเวณด้านล่างของอาศนะสงฆ์เท่านั้น
