หอนาฬิกาบิ๊กเบน ( Bigben )
หอนาฬิกาพระราชวังเวสต์มินสเตอร์ (Clock Tower, Palace of Westminster) หรือรู้จักดีในชื่อ บิ๊กเบน เป็นหอนาฬิกาประจำพระราชวังเวสต์มินสเตอร์ ซึ่งในปัจจุบันใช้เป็นรัฐสภาอังกฤษตั้งอยู่ทิศตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของพระราชวัง หอนาฬิกานี้ถูกสร้างหลังจากไฟไหม้พระราชวังเวสต์มินสเตอร์เดิม เมื่อวันที่ 16 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2377 โดยชาลส์ แบร์รี เป็นผู้ออกแบบ หอนาฬิกามีความสูง 96.3 เมตร โดยที่ตัวนาฬิกาอยู่สูงจากพื้น 55 เมตร ตัวอาคารสร้างด้วย สถาปัตยกรรมสมัยสมเด็จพระราชินีนาถวิกตอเรีย (victorian gothic)
หลายคนเข้าใจว่าบิกเบนเป็นชื่อหอนาฬิกาประจำรัฐสภาอังกฤษ แต่แท้ที่จริงแล้ว บิกเบนเป็นชื่อเล่นของระฆังใบใหญ่ที่สุด หนักถึง 13,760 กิโลกรัม ซึ่งแขวน ไว้บริเวณช่องลมเหนือหน้าปัดนาฬิกา ทั้งนี้มีระฆังรวมทั้งสิ้น 5 ใบ โดย 4 ใบจะถูกตีเป็นทำนอง ส่วนบิกเบนจะถูกตีบอกชั่วโมงตามตัวเลขที่เข็มสั้นชี้บนหน้าปัดนาฬิกา ทว่าคนส่วนใหญ่กลับใช้ชื่อบิกเบนเรียกตัวหอทั้งหมด
บางทีมักเรียกหอนาฬิกานี้ว่า หอเซนต์สตีเฟน (St. Stephen's Tower) หรือหอแห่งบิกเบน (Tower of Big Ben) ซึ่งที่จริงแล้วชื่อหอเซนต์สตีเฟนคือ ชื่อของหอในพระราชวังอีกหอหนึ่ง ซึ่งใช้เป็นทางเข้าไปอภิปรายในสภา ปัจจุบันภายในหอนาฬิกาไม่เปิดให้สาธารณชนเข้าชม เว้นแต่สำหรับผู้ที่อาศัยใน ประเทศอังกฤษ จะต้องทำเรื่องขอเข้าชมผ่านสมาชิกรัฐสภาอังกฤษประจำท้องถิ่นของตน ถ้าเป็นเด็กต้องมีอายุเกิน 11 ปี จึงจะเข้าชมหอได้ สำหรับชาวต่างประเทศนั้นยังไม่อนุญาตให้ขึ้นไป
หอนาฬิกาพระราชวังเวสต์มินสเตอร์ มีความสูงทั้งหมด 96.3 เมตร โดยในช่วง 61 เมตรแรก เป็นอาคารก่อด้วยอิฐ บุด้วยหิน ส่วนที่สูงจากนั้นเป็น ยอดแหลมทำด้วยเหล็กหล่อ ตัวหอตั้งอยู่บนฐานกว้าง 15 เมตร ยาว 15 เมตร หนา 3 เมตร อยู่ใต้ดินลึก 7 เมตร ตัวหอทั้งหมดหนักโดยประมาณ 8,667 ตัน หน้าปัดนาฬิกาทั้งสี่ด้านอยู่สูงจากพื้น 55 เมตร เนื่องจากสภาพดินในขณะที่มีการก่อสร้างหอ ทำให้ตัวหอค่อนข้างเอนไปทางทิศตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือ ประมาณ 220 มิลลิเมตร
หน้าปัดนาฬิกา
ครั้งหนึ่ง หน้าปัดนาฬิกาของหอมีขนาดใหญ่ที่สุดในโลก แต่ปัจจุบันถูกทำลายสถิติโดยหอนาฬิกาอัลเลน-แบร็ดเลย์ (Allen-Bradley Clock Tower) ที่รัฐวิสคอนซิน สหรัฐอเมริกา ทว่าผู้สร้างหอนาฬิกาอัลเลน-แบร็ดเลย์มิได้จัดให้มีการตีระฆังหรือสายลวดบอกเวลา จึงทำให้หอนาฬิกาพระราชวังเวสต์มินสเตอร์ ยังคงเป็น นาฬิกาสี่หน้าปัดที่มีการตีบอกเวลาที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในโลก กลไกนาฬิกาภายในหอสร้างเสร็จเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2397 แต่ตัวหอเสร็จในเวลา 4 ปีต่อมา
หน้าปัดนาฬิกาถูกออกแบบโดยออกุสตุส ปูจิน (Augustus Pugin) ตัวหน้าปัดทำด้วยโครงเหล็กกว้างและยาว 7 เมตร ประดับด้วยกระจก 576 ชิ้น เข็มสั้นมีความยาว 2.7 เมตร เข็มยาวมีความยาว 4.3 เมตร รอบ ๆ หน้าปัดประดับด้วยลายทองอย่างวิจิตร ใต้หน้าปัดสลักดุนเป็นข้อความภาษาละตินว่า DOMINESALVAM FAC REGINAM NOSTRAM VICTORIAM PRIMAM ซึ่งแปลว่า "โอ้ พระเจ้าข้า จงประทานความปลอดภัยให้พระนางวิกตอเรีย ด้วยเถิด"
นาฬิกาเริ่มเดินครั้งแรกเมื่อวันที่ 7 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2402 ต่อมาในระหว่างสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 กองทัพเยอรมันได้ทิ้งระเบิดทำลายรัฐสภาอังกฤษ และทำความเสียหายให้กับหน้าปัดด้านทิศตะวันตกเป็นอย่างมาก

ระฆังที่แขวนไว้ในหอนาฬิกาพระราชวังเวสต์มินสเตอร์ มีชื่ออย่างเป็นทางการว่ามหาระฆัง (The Great Bell) โดยทำการหล่อครั้งแรกเมื่อวันที่ 10 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2399 โดยวอร์เนอร์ออฟคริปเปิลเกต (Warner's of Cripplegate) หนัก 14.5 ตัน มีเรื่องเล่าสืบต่อกันมาว่า เบนจามิน ฮอลล์ (Benjamin Hall) เป็นแม่กองในการหล่อครั้งแรกนี้ จึงใช้ชื่อเล่นของเขาเป็นชื่อเล่นของระฆัง บางที่ก็ว่าระฆังอาจถูกตั้งชื่อหลังจากที่นักมวยรุ่นเฮฟวี่เวตชื่อ เบนจามิน เคานต์(Benjamin Caunt)

ขณะที่หอนาฬิกายังสร้างไม่เสร็จ มหาระฆังถูกแขวนไว้ในพระราชอุทยานพระราชวังเวสต์มินสเตอร์ แต่กลับแตกเมื่อถูกตีด้วยค้อนที่หนักเกินไป จึงให้หล่อใหม่ที่บริษัทระฆังไวต์แชพเพล (Whitechapel Bell Foundry) ครั้งนี้ระฆังหนัก 13.76 ตัน สูง 2.2 เมตร และกว้าง 2.6 เมตร มหาระฆังถูกนำขึ้นแขวนในห้องระฆังบริเวณช่องลมของตัวหอ เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2446 พร้อมด้วยระฆังเล็ก ใช้เวลาทั้งสิ้น 18 ชั่วโมง จึงสำเร็จ ต่อมาในเดือนกันยายนของปีถัดมา มหาระฆังก็ร้าว แต่ก็แก้ไขโดยการหมุนระฆังมิให้ส่วนที่ร้าวถูกตี และก็ไม่ได้ทำการซ่อมแซมมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน
